This article at NY Times makes sense and is consistent with my experience making bread. I’ve bought those ‘artisan breads’ that (as the article says) are so in vogue now. I love ’em . Crusty outside. Chewy inside. Holes – where the butter melts through and gets all over your hands! Yum! I want to… Continue reading Bread keading debunked

This is totally consistent with Buddhism
Every time I hear some story about how someone has identified a part of the brain (the brain being a single organ) that does the processing for activity “X”, I usually mutter a “hmph”. We are so missing the boat if we think that the brain is some master organ and the body is its… Continue reading This is totally consistent with Buddhism
Alright, this is what I miss about snow
Photos at washingtonpost.com of the snow. People here in California have heard me say I miss the snow. To a person, they all point out that it’s an easy day trip up to the Sierras, or for a weekend – if I really want to see snow. … feh I look at these photos at… Continue reading Alright, this is what I miss about snow
This “green” thing creates a lot of new angles on things
NYTimes blog piece about the packaging of food. I hate throwing out food. Not for the environmental reason, but just for the stupidity of spending time and money to get the food (travel to the store, gasoline, soak up an hour’s time, etc.) and bring it home and then only to throw it out! Depositing checks with your phone (well…. your iPhone actually)
This 3:44 video at ZDnet (with brief add at beginning) is a fascinating demo of depositing checks to your (USAA) bank account by using your iPhone. You run their app on your phone (at the end they mention Android and Blackberry versions are coming). You log in. You go through the deposit process which includes… Continue reading Depositing checks with your phone (well…. your iPhone actually)
Apologists for natural resource extractors
I read “Straight Dope” now and then. Being sick lately, I’ve had more time than usual. I love this posting by Cecil as he counters a long tirade from the National Fisheries Institute. This NFI guy is just like all the other natural resource industry reps who spin science to their favor in order to… Continue reading Apologists for natural resource extractors
Those NY-Times interactive graphics. This one on the Federal budget
They’ve got a great one up that shows the Federal budget for 2010 and 2011 (as proposed by Obama). What’s really interesting is the button to click that removes “mandatory spending” from the plot. There’s a LOT of mandatoryspending! See the link over in the sidebar. NYTimes budget interactive graphic
