I’m truly tempted to get an iPad. The WiFi version will be fine with me. No need for 3G connectivity (yet?) – I don’t want the extra monthly service bill. I have a hunch that it’ll be a better eBook reader than the Kindle – plus it’ll do a whole lot more.
I was an early adopter of the Kindle. Have not upgraded to any more recent version. I’ve enjoyed my Kindle. But I am a little miffed at the shovel-ware they pumped out in the way of poorly OCR’ed books just so they could say they have a large inventory of books ready to sell. Any more than the barest formatting ends up garbled on a Kindle screen. Plain paragraphs of prose work great. Poetry suffers because of the formatting loss. Books with any sort of art or graphic or picture that’s integral to the text are just lost. The feature to change font size is great – except that it only works inside a book! The UI for navigating your library of books, ordering over the “whispernet”, managing the settings of your Kindle – all done in a UI designed for one font size only.
